Benefits of solid thread ring gauge design over AGD style of thread ring gauges
- Solid thread ring gauges have several advantages over American Gage Design (AGD) adjustable ring gauges:
- Higher Accuracy; Solid gauges are ground from a single piece of steel, ensuring precise and consistent pitch diameter, roundness and thread geometry. AGD gauges, are adjusted via a screw driver and slot mechanism which can introduce slight variations or out-of-roundness leading to error.
- Direct Measurement; Solid ring gauge are directly measured for effective diameter (pitch diameter). AGD style must be measured with a set plug. The calibration of AGD style is based on feel against the set plug using a screwdriver. Therefore one lab technician and set the AGD ring tigher than another lab technician. The other variable is the where is the pitch diameter of the set plug (top, middle or bottom of the pitch diameter range). This also creates uncertainty in the actual pitch diameter of the AGD style.
- Cost Savings; AGD style can cost more than Solid ring gauge design as well. No need to purchase the set plug for manufacturing or calibration; provided you equipment designed to measure solid ring gauges over mastered Tballs. This is especially true for ACME and STUB ACME thread gauging where sizing is unique to each application. These AGD set plugs can really be expensive.
- Greater Durability; with no moving parts, solid thread ring gauges are less prone to wear, damage or misalignment from drops or heavy use. AGD gauges adjustment screws can loosen or degrade over time, requiring more calibration with a setting plug, adding time and complexity.
